Öland is an island in the Baltic Sea and is bordered to the West by Småland via Kalmarsund, and linked to the mainland by way of the Öland Bridge.The island has about 13,600 well-known ancient monuments. Southern Öland is dominated by a variety of sparse stunted trees and forms into a limestone barren plain about 10 km wide called Stora Alvaret or the Great Alvar.
