How To Describe The Good Life in Sävsjö

One way is to tell you about the fresh air, the fantastic nature, the 179 lakes and rivers, idyllic small town life and most you need is nearby - and not to mention the countryside. Another way is to describe the beautiful area of Eksjöhovgårdsområdet in Sävsjö, where castle ruins from the 1600s are the obvious centerpiece. The old Eksjöhovgård farm is now an inn and hostel.

The center is an idyllic town where The Culture House is the heart of a lively cultural scene with theater, cinema and various events. A little further on is Ljunga Park which was a sanatorium in the beginning from the turn of the century. Today, it is a hotel and restaurant. Lagunen is between The Culture House and Ljunga Park, and during the summer it is popular to walk amidst the flowers in Sävsjö Garden; which is a loop among the parks and gardens in central Sävsjö. Vrigstad is one of the municipality’s urban centers and has a medieval history as a shopping area. Still today, there is a market held twice a year.

Similar to Sävsjö, are the urban areas of Stockaryd and Rörvik which are connected by railway. Sävsjö Municipality has about 11,000 inhabitants and we are working to become even more.

History

A Little History

One can say that Sävsjö was born October 1, 1864 when the newly built train station was inaugurated. The name on the station sign was "Säfsjö" and was a reminder that in the beginning, the main line would go just east of Sävsjön with a stop placed in the village of Sävsjö. The station had been placed in an excellent location between the surrounding villages. There was only a small house in Gröndal approximately where the square is today, and showed signs of human cultivation. However, the stations location was well chosen because of the road between Vetlanda and Brigstad-Jönköping. Furthermore, basic provisions were available in Komstad, just a few miles to the west. During the first few years, there was no form of governance but decisions were made in advance at Ljunga and Vallsjö parishes. However, society grew rapidly and in 1886 Sävsjö became a municipal society. After diligent pursual, Sävsjö became a city on January 1, 1947. Although Sävsjö is a young society, the district has historical findings showing people have lived here since the ancient times. There are graves and ancient monuments, and at least five churches from 1100s. From Elna Nilsson's book "Sävsjö, A Society's Life and Development of the Main Line."
