Österlen

Österlen is designated as the plains of Southeastern Skåne. Its scenic beauty, along with a low degree of urbanization and picturesque coastal communities, characterizes the area.

The only city and largest urban area in Österlen is Simrishamn. The concept for Österlen in the 1800s consisted of the plains East of Ystad and villages on the Eastern route (road), which then bored towards the Northeast. The borders went from around Brösarps Station - S: t Olof - Hammenhög - Borrby - Mälarhusen and out to the coast. The area to the Northwest of Ystad is called “Västra Österlen” (Western Österlen) also know to the locals as “Västerlen.”

Today, it consists of Ingelstads, Järrestads and often Albo district to Österlen in Skåne. Sometimes, brokerage ads and tourist brochures relates the concept of Österlen with a broader meaning. Today, there are no exact borders for Österlen, but from a tourism perspective, it is the region extending roughly Southeast of Highway 19 - between Brösarp in the North, then down to Ystad in the South.
