Öland

Öland is an island in the Baltic Sea and is bordered to the West by Småland via Kalmarsund, and linked to the mainland by way of the Öland Bridge.

The island has about 13,600 well-known ancient monuments. Southern Öland is dominated by a variety of sparse stunted trees and forms into a limestone barren plain about 10 km wide called Stora Alvaret or the Great Alvar. All of Öland has the same province name, and is the smallest province in Sweden. Öland is divided into two municipalities, Mörbylånga and Borgholm. Öland is Sweden's second largest island, after Gotland.

Öland is Sweden's smallest province. What distinguishes Öland from other regions are the bedrock, the alvar soils, the lime-rich soil, olive groves, the unique flora and the rich bird life. Öland is rich in ancient monuments; the majority is from the early Iron Age. The past mixed with contemporary, creates an unprecedented experience for both young and old visitors.

The long beautiful days in Öland are naturally a relaxing haven for many. But, if you want more then rest, that’s all right too. Öland is an unusually active island.
