History

Falkenbergs History

Falkenberg began to enter into history's light at the end of 1200s, when the first written evidence was recorded. It was Danish then, as well as the rest of Halland. From the 1300's and up to the Nordic Seven Year War, the city was known as "New-Falkenberg."

Falkenbergs Castle, where the Castle County ruled, was destroyed by Engelbrekts troops in 1434 and was not being built up again, so the Castle County disappeared. The first known priviledge letter granting city rights is from 1558. The city then grew up on the north side of the Ätran River, but during the 1900s, it spread to the south side of river.

Falkenbergs oldest known seal is from 1584 and has the text "Novi opidi falkenburgensis" which roughly means "New City Falkenberg".
