A contrasting meeting place with the city's pulse and the wilderness' quietness- creates a pleasant harmony. This town in Lapland is generous and always willing to show its best side in summer and winter. Maybe it's just location and seasonal changes that make our landscape so unique or being between the coast and mountains. Lycksele is situated in Southern Lapland, in the middle of Ume Lappmark. Lappstockholm (as sometimes called) - received its town charter in 1946 and became the first city in Lapland.

There is something for everyone in Lycksele. Here is everything from speed-filled and exciting attractions to cultural experiences and adventures in the deep forests. This town in Lapland is a contrast between a meeting place in the pulse of the city and the wilderness serenity. Lycksele, also known as Lapp-Stockholm, has a long tradition of being a "capital" in Southern Lapland. It is easy to get to - you can fly to or from Stockholm three times a day! We have shops, entertainment and lots of activities. Cool events. Alot happens in Lycksele. Hotel Lapland is an attractive entertainment organizer and arranges weekend shows that attract audiences from near and far. But, there is much more happening here too.

Kristineberg Swimming Hall

Come visit our family-friendly recreation center in Kristineberg with sports hall, gym, swimming pool and walking distance to skiing areas. The swimming hall has a jacuzzi, climbing wall and the water is about 27 degrees celcius. New for this year in the gym is the rowing machine, treadmills and the new solarium.

Lycksele Swimming Hall

The Lycksele Swimming Hall has a 25m pool with 8 lanes, a teaching pool with small slide, and a paddling pool for the really small.

For those who want to relax, there is a traditional sauna and steam bath. New solariums were acquired in autumn -06. Lycksele Swimming Hall also has a gym where you can build up your strength and conditioning.

Downhill Skiing

Bocksliden
Bocksliden is 11.5 mil from Umeå and only 1 mil from Lycksele. With its 4 lifts, 5 runs and artificial snow, can offer you good skiing for the entire family. Longest slope is 800m, and the biggest slope is 160m. Not only do we have good downhill skiing but you can also go to and from the slopes via snowmobile trails. A warm cabin with TV and for those who want to enjoy a cup of coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate, hot dogs, sandwiches and much more. A warm welcome awaits you!

Kåtabergets Recreation Club
The club operates a slalom facility during the winter and is located approximately 5km West of Rusksele, 500 meters from Enebacken. The slope is open every Saturday and Sunday when there is snow. There are plans to be open some evenings during the week. KÅTT, (Kåtabergets Recreation Club) was formed in April 2002. The first annual meeting was held in October of that year. The goal of the association is to operate the Kåtabergets ski-lift and other leisure activities. In February 2003, the club took over the ski facility from "Friluftsfrämjandet" whom operated it since its inception in the 1960s.

Guys, bring your pole and enjoy a fishing adventure around Lycksele Municipality. Find the fish of your choice here. It's no coincidence that fishing competitions like the European Championships and other World Cup-Level Competitions pick the the waters around Lycksele. Here are 35,000 hectares of rivers, streams, lakes and ponds for fishing enthusiast to enjoy. There is an unlimited amount of pike and perch. Grayling and trout are the preferred species in the flowing waters of Öreälven and Vindelälven Rivers. In the latter, there is even salmon. In addition, you will find a number of implanted fish.

Lyckans Recreational Area is 7 km from Lycksele center and covers some 8,000 hectares of beautiful landscape and fishing. Lots of cottages, picnic areas, shelters and fine hiking trails. Moreover, it is easy to reach by country roads that run across the field. Even those that like to hunt can feel at home. Around Lycksele, there is about 500,000 hectares of game-rich hunting grounds. If you choose to hunt on your own, you only need to get a hunting license for the area. You can also book a package arrangement with a skilled hunting guide. To participate in a moose hunting team, you should contact one of the members. Scenic excursions to Mårdselforsen in Vindelälven takes you on a tour around 40 islands, many linked by hanging bridges and footbridges. There are the protection shelters, fire places and a coffee house for those who want a break during the journey. Vindelälven is also a favorite. Several activity companies offer rafting where you choose the skill level. Öreälven is very well suited for those wishing to embark on a canoe trip. Make your trip longer by staying overnight out in the open, during those bright summer nights. Canoes and life jackets for hire. Hiking trails are many and are well prepared. Some of them can be long, others require shorter trips. For example, Domarvägen has routes of varying lengths, from 2 km to 1.5 mil. Smörbanan, between Granträskliden and Kulla, Old Lycksele Road between Bocksliden and Ekorrträskvägen and Magdalenastigen starting just outside of town, are just a few suggestions for those who enjoy walking and hiking. Museum

Museum of Forestry

The Museum of Forestry in Lycksele has a number of very interesting collections and exhibitions. The exhibitions belong to the Huggar (Manual Era) and Maskinpoken (Machine Era). The recently acquired collection "Sami Skatter" is a collaboration between Sparbanksstiftelsen Norrland, Lycksele Sameförening, Skogsmuseet AB and Lycksele Municipality. Parts of this exhibition will be shown this summer.

Sami Skatter
An astonishing collection has been brought home to Lycksele. It's with great pleasure that Lycksele Municipality has established the Birger Nordin collection of approximately 2,500 unique Sami objects which made their way back to Lycksele. Several of the objects originated in Ume lappmark and Lycksele which makes it extra special to have them here. For centuries, Lycksele has been a center of Ume lappmark, now has possession of the Sami objects.

Manual & Machine Era
In the museum exhibitions of Manual and the Machine Era, we meet many of the forest rural people; lumberjacks, the cook, the young shepard, the small holding wife, the forest officer, the state forest ranger, the log floater, the scaler, the machine operator, the repairman and the constructor. Forestry through the ages, in which various technical achievements, gear, housing, food and clothing, together give a picture of the historical development. The exhibition is also about the forest, what we have used the timber for in the past and what do we do to it today.

Parks

Lycksele Zoo

The Lycksele Zoo is Sweden's Northernmost zoo and specializes in Nordic animals. It was founded in 1959 by Holger Lithner and started as a small animal collection on Gammplatsen. Then, in 1966 it moved to Brännberget where it has developed into Norrlands largest tourist attraction.

Arrangements
Lycksele Zoo has great potential for those who want to find something different for the kick-off, entertainment, office, or for the family. Everything from groups of 10 people to 7,000. Many of the arrangements work very well when the park is open to the public, or perhaps you want to book the park one evening for yourself. We arrange everything from coffee, food, guided tours, pentathlon, or an exotic experience among our Nordic animals.

Worth Seeing

Gammplatsen (the Old Place)

As early as the Stone Age people chose to settle here. The information that has been gathered through archeological digging shows that it was exactly here on the Islet that the Sámi and the settlers made contacts with the authorities, represented by the clergy and the schoolmaster. In 1606, King Carolus IX's emissary and the Sámi met in order to decide the location of a church and market site. They agreed that the Islet was a good place, because neither the Sámi from Ångermanland nor the Piteå areas would then get too long way to church. The work started - building material was procured, and before Christmas in 1607 the first church was finished. In connection with the two annual markets legal matters were handled, and the King's bailiffs levied taxes. The church site - with a Lapp Town for the cots of the Sámi, the Finn Town for the settlers and the Burgher Town for the tradesmen - grew, but the space was too limited, so when the new church was built on the heath in 1799, everything gradually moved to the site of present Lycksele.


The open-air museum, run by Lycksele Hembygdsgille (the Lycksele Folklore Society), illustrates the development within several different areas - the settlers, the church, school, farming and forestry, hunting, telecommunications, trade, tailoring and shoemaking. There is a cafeteria at Ruselegården (the Rusele manor-house) and time for reflection in the Margareta Church. The Sami Association is responsible for the display of Sami culture. The all-year open Forestry Museum is also in the area.

Sameviste

With a diverse range of activities, most can find something to do. We hope you find something of interest. One of the interesting sights is Samevistet at Gammplatsen.

The place where Samevistet now stands is a historical place, it was here on Gammplatsen where Lycksele official church and marketplace became in 1607. Therefore in 2007, Lycksele celebrated it's 400 year anniversary. Over the past few years, it has become a meeting place for Sami residents in the region and for tourists to see a very genuine settlement. Here, enthusiasts from the local Sami Association built and renovated it according to old traditions. This is not a time for nail, plastic or sheet metal.

The Underground Church at Kristineberg

History
In the mid-1930s Boliden Mining Ltd started ore mining at Kristineberg. A totally new community grew up next to the deposit. Kristineberg could be compared with a new Klondyke. In 1943, when the dressing plant was finished, the company had about 500 employees, and the total population in the formerly rather small village was now close to 1 000 persons.

The Revelation
In 1946 something happened which really put Kristineberg on the map and made a great stir way outside Kristineberg and way outside county and country borders. When the smoke had settled after a blast about 100 metres down in the mine, a two-metre tall figure was discovered on the mine wall - a Christ figure had revealed itself. People flocked in order to look at Christ in glittering quartzite and with an ankle-length mantle. The shaft was filled up later on - but the discovery, which has inspired to a lot of works of art and prophesies, has never ceased to fascinate all over the world.

Tuggengården (The Tuggen Manor House)

Welcome to have a look at Olle Blomberg's Home and Studio Exhibition - the 30s to the 90s. Olle and Hertha Blomberg used to receive visitors to their home at Tuggensele. In the summer a sign "Tuggengården - Welcome" used to hang along the Lycksele road. Here in the forest country on the bank of the Ume River they found an inexhaustable source of inspiration, and they wished for more people to experience and get inspired by the beautiful scenery. Olle Blomberg readily spoke to visitors about his painting. In the course of a number of years he developed the educational color clock.
