Welcome to Oskarshamn

Oskarshamn is beautifully situated in the middle of Smålands coast - a region which boasts the most sunshine in the country. In addition to a fantastic coastline with solar rocks and clear blue water, you can also experience a unique farmland and our magical forests in Småland.

In 1646, the fishing village Duderhultevik was made a town by resolution of Queen Kristina - which meant that Kalmar would keep the market here four times per year. Much later - in 1856 - King Oscar I appointed the city name to Oskarshamn and the origin of this good harbor began. Boats were built here very early developing trade, shipping and ship building which have marked the city throughout the years.

The nature is all around Oskarshamn, you can enjoy the archipelago harmonyl or go out and explore the diverse cultural landscape. Or, why not stroll around the city which offers attractions, a wonderful city life and shopping opportunities.

The city of Oskarshamn is surrounded by many small picturesque towns, each with its own unique character. The proximity to the city and country makes life comfortable ... it feels good to be here!

City

A Coastal Municipality

With over 5,400 islands in Oskarshamn Municipality, makes it Sweden's fourth-richest island municipality. The archipelago is from Tjust in the north, to Kalmarsund in the south. The Oskarshamn coast is varied, with a denser archipelago in the north and more open to the south. The Misterhults archipelago in the north, has thousands of islands and a narrow sound, and is considered as one of Sweden's best waters for kayaking. At Påskallavik in the south, you can experience the transition between the southern archipelago and the northern archipelago. But, perhaps the most spectacular and mythical is the island of Blå Jungfrun, which is a couple of miles from Oskarshamn's coast. Its' characteristic profile is visible all the way along the entire coast.

Emån is one of Sweden's largest rivers. It is 22 miles long and offers both tranquil and scenic routes or wild rapids for canoeing. Lake Maren in Marströmmen is a wonderful lake for canoeing and fishing. There is also a shorter tour of the area around Gunnarsö, with a magnificent view over the island called BlåJungfrun.

Runnö Island

Runnö is an island with a long history and was already mentioned in 1300, in connection with Valdemars segelled. The island is 580 hectares and almost completely round which maybe why it is named the "Round Island". The nature differs geologically and biotope from the surrounding archipelago. Geologically remarkable because it consists of Cambrian Sandstone. The island is generally flat and overgrown with sparse pine forest and lichen. When you walk down any of the island's old roads, you will see in many places how the rocks formed. There are two villages on the western side of the island, Sörgården and Norrgården. Through the villages, there are ten farms along one road. Eel fishing has been the main industry but agriculture plays a part on a small regional scale. There is no regular service to Runnö but in Sörgården, there is a public dock for visiting boats.
