History
Lunds History
Lund recorded history stretches back to the end of the 900s, when the city was founded by the Danish King Sven Tveskägg of Denmark. With more than a thousand years of history, Lund is one of the oldest cities in Sweden. However, Skåne was Danish and would remain so for over 600 hundred years. Lund was given a powerful mint early and so became its' 27 churches and monasteries, a significant curricula - and it was a church city already back in the Middle Ages. In 1658, Skåne Swedish with the peace in Roskilde, but the troubles were not over. Twenty years later, the Danes made a last attempt to regain Skåne. Karl XII's long-suffering army prevailed in the end, but the battle of Lund in 1678 ended with many dead and parts of the city burned. Even today you can clearly see traces of the Danish urban planning, especially how many inner city streets largely follow the medieval times structures which bands together inside a hexagonal-shaped fortress. A small piece of this grassland remains at Södertull. In addition to the Cathedral are many other buildings left from the Middle Ages and Renaissance Period. "Krognoshuset" which is in the middle of Mårtenstorget (Square) and "Liberiet" next to the Cathedral are among the oldest. Kungshuset (The King's House) from 1579 is in the middle of the park called Lundagård and was the residence for King Frederick II during his visits to Lund, but later was donated to the University.
