Welcome to Sundsvall!

The city between the mountains - in the middle of the northern landscape and center for events. Start with a visit to one of the most beautiful cities in the country, with long boulevards and richly decorated buildings in Neo-Renaissance style. Our beautiful stone houses were built as the town rose from the ashes of a devastating fire in 1888.

Sundsvall has always been a trading center, and today the shopping sector is growing rapidly in both the city central, as well as in Birsta Köpstad.

The large range of shows, concerts and performances attracts people from all over Norrland. Hotel Södra Berget, Casino Cosmopol, the City Hall and Tonhallen are just a few venues that always has something exciting to offer.

Being close to nature makes Sundsvall unique. We have oceans, rivers, lakes, forests and mountains. Come and unwind. Pick mushrooms and berries, hike, paddle and fish - or get an adrenaline kick by a challenging climb. Cycling, canoeing, horse riding, and trails are available for all skill levels. Take yourself out to the municipalities outskirts. Each area has its own fascinating story to tell!

History

Sundsvalls History

1621 - Sundsvall established by Gustav II Adolf
1721 - The city was invaded and burned by Russian soldiers
1803 - The city is once again in flames. Smallpox and cholera breaks out.
1849 - The first steam sawmill built and becomes the start of the world's largest sawmill industry
1888 - Sundsvall burns and the entire city is destroyed. 9000 people become homeless.
1927 - East coast route inaugurated. Now the capital is only 3 hours away.
2001 - Sweden's first international casino.

There are many fine bathing areas in Sundsvall; Tranvik Havsbad, Bergafjärden, Sandnäsets or any of Alnös small bays.

Tranvikens Sea Bathing

Tranviken is in southern Alnö and offers sea bathing with a long fine sandy beach. A temperate swimming pool, sauna, golf, gym, volleyball, shop and restaurant.

Skärgårds (Archipelago) - and restaurant boat M / S Medvind, has a large sun deck, a cozy dining room on the upper deck and conference room / night club on the lower deck. Three bars and room for 295 passengers. M / S Medvind also offers tours and roundtrips to other destinations along the coast. Drakborgen - Children Play Center

Drakborgen is a childrens play center in Birsta. At Drakborgen, kids can play in one of Sweden's largest play centers consisting of 3 floors, the slide, tunnels, suspension bridges, hopping castle and a mini-land for children between 0-4 years. Drakborgen has a large restaurant and also offers a variety of children's party packages.

Norra Berget - Sundsvalls City Park

Norra Berget (North Mountain) is Sundsvalls city park with an animal preservation, lookout tower, walking trails, playground, playhouse, cafes and restaurants. Do not miss Handelsgård Vinfabriken with locally produced crafts and small-scale produced delicacies. There is also an open-air museum with approximately 40 buildings from all over Medelpad, also included is one of Norrland's oldest timber houses, Kyrkladan, which is dated back to 1310. See handicrafts, Maritime Museum with the famous Skvader (Swedish fictional animal, part hare and part grouse).

Crafts- and Maritime Museum with Skvader shop

We show a variety of crafts such as the shoemaker and watchmaker; along with about 30 captain paintings. The museum also includes an exhibition on the Samis, who had their summer stays at North Stadsberget. Skvader Shop with the famous Skvader (which is a fictional animal, a mixture of hare and grouse), homemade candy, crafts, crafts, gifts and souvenirs.

Guillotine and Model Museum

Museum with models of the Berlin Wall, the guillotine, bridges, fences, timber transport vehicles etc. Fully functioning guillotine model in scale 1:2. There are photographs to look at and information about the models.

Kulturmagasinet (Culture Warehouse)

Glassed harbor warehouse with a museum, library, cafe, archives, program activities, open pre-school and consumer information. Bridges connect the buildings which gives it a special character. Permanent exhibitions at the museum, for example, "The Chief in Högom" and "The city that transformed itself."

Sundsvalls Museum

Sundsvalls museum is located in Kulturmagasinet which is located in the harbor area, at E4. The museum offers many interesting permanent and temporary exhibitions, and a program of activities to attract both the young and old. Nature

Klampenborgs Nature Reserve

Nature reserve with ample presence of broadleaved trees, which were planted during the sawmill epoch and in the former herrgårdsparken (park). Here is also härnögraniten (granite), an unusual rock that exist only in three locations in the county.

Nature Reserves

In Sundsvall, there are several fine nature reserves, among other things: Stornäset - rich bird life along the seaside beach meadows.
Brämön - Medelpads ultimate outpost in the sea.
Grenforsen - beautiful ravin in lower Klampenborg - rich deciduous forest at the old sawmill.

Nature Trails

A 1.8 km long path with eight information stations where it describes the trees, plants and animals, forestry and nature conservation. The path is not used much, so follow the markings carefully. Heavy shoes or boots are recommended.

Smedsgårdens Nature Reserve

A five hectares large pasture and hay fields. The rock is limestone, and plant life is very interesting. Cowslip and Spring draba are some of the species.

Stornäsets Nature Reserve

A reserve which is a very important resting place for migratory birds - one of the best in the county. The bird-watching tower at the outermost edge is open to the public.

Södra Berget (The South Mountain)

Sundsvalls Recreation Area No 1. Here are the World Cup slalom slope class, one of Sweden's longest lighted ski tracks, a European unique tower, adventure trails, grill hut, shelters with barbecue, ski station. There is also one of Sweden's most modern conference and spa hotels.

One of the country's most beautiful and most visited cemeteries. Awarded the North's most beautiful park in 1996.

A popular park in central Sundsvall with Sofia Gisbergs beautiful fountain, which sprouted water the first time on 25 August 1886 - two years before the big fire!

Worth Seeing

Alnö Medival Church

Church from the Middle Ages and built in the latter part of 1100's. Medelpads oldest church with an interior that counts for one of the best in the country.

Kvissle-Nolby Ancient Ruins

Unique ancient remains with Norrland's largest kurgan (burial mound), a rune stone, early medieval church ruins and a grave with several kurgans. The ancient remains areat is one of the most visible markings of power and status north of Dalälven. The area is beautiful and well-kept with benches and tables, and a sign-posted archeology path which guides visitors through the 1000-2000 years old cemeteries and farms.

Lörudden Fishing Village

Fishing village dating from the 1600s. Well preserved environment with chapel, fish, fish store, crafts and a stone labyrinth.

Njurunda Church

Built in 1856-62 and in neoclassic style. Especially worth seeing is the astronomical clock, church stables which are 200 years old, and a church museum in the tower room with objects from the 1400s. Near the church is a grave from the Iron Age.

Lars Ahlin - a literary walk

Walk in the footsteps of the author Lars Ahlin, born and raised in Sundsvall. It consists of 14 different locations in the city center, where there are enamel plates with text from Lars Ahlin books. Information and map is available from the Kulturmagasinet or Tourist Office.
