Welcome to Österlen/Ystad

It is said the sky is a little closer in Österlen. The sky and the sea blend together to form a sort of celestial sea. Maybe it is this celestial sea, which makes the light so special and attracts so many to live and work here in Southeast Skåne. The location, is certainly another reason.

Ystad, the region’s hub in terms of communications and the charming medieval city attracts many visitors whom wants to follow in the footsteps of the fictional detective Kurt Wallander. Österlen is slow paced which is perfect for private relaxation, but many companies also choose to conduct their meetings here in the quiet conference environments. The destination is marked by a rich cultural life and offers many nature experiences.

Do not miss the wonderful beaches that are waiting for all of us who enjoy to go barefoot.

A warm welcome to visit us in the region of light!

City

See & Do

Agriculture is one of the strongest industries in the area due to the mild and humid climate and combined with the fertile soil. Other important industries are fishing and tourism. The tourist season starts slowly with the antique fair in Brösarp during the early spring. Then, the season takes off when Konstrundan (Art Show) starts during Easter. People come from far and wide to visit the craftsmen, artists and designers in their studios. We have five golf courses in Tomelilla, Stiby, Ystad and two in Vik. Gardening, Health / SPA, cycling, horseback riding, culture, food and nature experiences are just some of the other popular tourist activities.

Harvest Celebrations and markets are traditionally celebrated and good food and drinks have become the area's trademark. The Scanian culinary traditions, combined with a creative crossover cuisine and the locally grown products are a chefs delight, and creates an unforgettable unique culinary experience . Enjoy a picnic on the beach or dinner at one of the gourmet restaurant's - it is just to pick. During the Matrundan (A culinary adventure) in May, the area offers food, accommodation and activities in culinary tourism. Normally, in the middle of May the fruit trees are in bloom and is a wonderful experience, especially in the Kivik area.

The countryside has many farms and businesses where you can find handmade and unique products. Many combine their store operations with a gallery or a café. In Tomelillam, there is a low-priced department store called Bo Ohlsson. In Tomelilla, Simrishamn and Ystad there are many fine shops, cafes and restaurants and you can stroll around and enjoy a pleasant small town's atmosphere. Every Saturday there is a large flea market located next to the cemetery in Simrishamn. Check the newspapers for more information on the flea markets - the flea market tradition is an important part of the area's shopping culture.

Renting a cottage is popular and several campsites have great locations which also makes camping in the area very popular. Or, if you would prefer to crawl into a warm bed there are many castles, hotels, bed and breakfast's or hostels to choose from in the area.

Geographically, Österlen goes around the southeast on highway 19 between Brösarp in the north and down to Ystad in the south, which either in whole or part collectively includes the municipalities of Ystad, Tomelilla and Simrishamn. The part of Ystad municipality is an area called Österlen / Ystad. Enough said about borders, it's you, the guest whom decides what is Österlen and Ystad - geographically, but above all - in terms of content.
